christian’s story
I’ve been a competitive athlete for as long as I can remember, making the transition from basketball to endurance racing in 2008. From day one I’ve self-coached. Starting with teaching myself how to swim in 6-months to conquer Escape-ing from Alcataz, to more recently completing my 6th full Ironman finish. I relish the challenge of learning on my own to grow my knowledge and approach.
Self-coaching has always intrigued me—every season strategically applying new theories, methodologies, and learnings to my own quest for high performance. As I transitioned to full Ironman racing, my approach has varied across the spectrum. From early infancy, I gave credibility to so called ‘experts’ on regurgitated and status quo generalizations of what’s right for everyone, never accounting for the fact that we’re all unique. Too often that widespread message is based on the traditional approach of arduous volume with no purpose upwards to 20 to 30-hrs a week (for recreational athletes with full-time careers!)–all quantity with no quality for marginal performance gains. The result beyond the finish line? Life compromises, physical & adrenal fatigue, frustration, perpetual brain fog, lack of sleep, and overall life chaos.
From one end of the spectrum to the other, I’ve taken on a full Ironman with a super minimal high-intensity interval based approach, targeting specific physiological systems with pinpoint precision on an average of 10-hrs per week–all quality with strategic quantity for exponential gains.
I’ve ultimately adopted what has proven to be the perfect blend, naturally in sync with protocols practiced by world renowned professional coaches in our sport–further individualized for each athlete’s unique needs and supported by a solid foundation of functional strength, mechanics, and mobility.
Personally, I’m energized by the desire for continual perspective and growth through unique experiences and challenges, while making life balance an uncompromising priority to ensure my personal happiness. I seek a life of simplicity, mindfulness, and deliberateness with a streamlined efficiency, working consciously to eliminate all distractions not adding value to my life.
